content inside, but chances are the receiver won’t bother to find out unless they
appear interesting enough on the outside to make the recipient take time to look into
them.
4. Distribute the handouts, “Three Steps to Success” and “Take 5: Tips for Life.” Guide
the students in a discussion of the information. You may also want to invite a career
counselor in to conduct mock interviews for practice.
6. The students will work in dyad (pairs) to study the “General Résumé Information and
Tips” and samples. They will assist each other in completing their job application
packets (cover letter, résumé, and thank you note). Encourage students to use this
activity to apply for a real job.
8. Arrange for students to have access to computers and printers, laptops, or similar
technology devices for use in completing their work.
9. Allow students who wish to share any letters or aspect of their résumé that they feel is
especially well done or interesting.
ASSESSMENT:
Choose one or both of the following methods of assessment:
1. The students’ job application packets (cover letters, résumés, and thank-you notes)
will be placed in their portfolios.
2. Students who completed their packets with a specific position in mind will want to
mail their cover letter and résumé to a prospective employer and place copies in their
portfolio.
SERVICE LEARNING OPPORTUNITY:
1.
The class can survey parents, faculty, and community members to find out what jobs
and work thy need done (both voluntary and paid work).

MODULE 7:
7. Once the students have finished writing their cover letters, résumés, and thank-you
notes, divide them into cooperative proofreading teams of four members each. (Give
each group a set of four colored pens or markers.) Ask one member of each group to
read aloud the directions for writing a résumé. Students are to highlight areas on the
résumés needing revision or errors needing correction. Answer any questions that
arise.

5. After the discussion and/or mock interviews are complete, explain to the students that
they are going to apply for a job. Ask if they know what a résumé is. Allow them to
explain that a résumé is a summary of experience sometimes submitted with a job
application.
