Writing Activity Sheet
Students will establish viable goals, including attending and graduating from college.
DESCRIPTOR:
Students will develop plans for their own success.
ACTIVITIES:
Middle school students need experiences that will help them understand not only the long
term value of building a positive school and work record, but also the need to develop
skills in writing résumés and completing job applications. The students will use the
information about themselves from previous activities to apply for a job. They will write
a cover letter, résumé, and thank you note to a prospective employer.
1. Pique the students’ interest by showing them two boxes—one wrapped nicely in
interesting paper, the other in a plain cardboard box with no markings or wrappings
on it and/or display two books—one with a very snappy and colorful cover, the other
with a dark, solid colored cover.
2. Ask which box or book the students find most appealing and which they would like to
open and keep.
3. Continue by asking the students to explain how applying for a job is like offering a
gift box or book t o an employer. Explain that the gift or book is like a job
