When students go off to college, they will encounter an entirely different system for determining their grades that was used in high school. This activity will teach them how to calculate their Grade Point Average (GPA), sometimes known as the Grade Point Ratio (GPR). Students will also learn how a bad semester can adversely affect a cumulative GPA. 2. Introduce this activity by asking students if they have any idea what a GPA or GPR is. Explain that colleges report not only individual course letter grades, but also calculate a numeric semester grade and a numeric cumulative grade. It is these numeric grades that colleges use to track a student’s progress. 3. Distribute the “College Speak” handout. Have students read the definition of hour(s).
