ASSESSMENT:
Each group will create a poster or flyer on a computer titled “Helpful Hints for College
Selection.” Put these on display in your room and consider distributing one (or a
combination) to other students in the school.
FAMILY INVOLVEMENT:
v If students do their own research (Example: writing to colleges for information), the
audience to which they report could include parents/guardians as well as fellow
ProTeam students. Most colleges also have home pages that are accessible online.
PROTEAM DREAMQUEST CURRICULUM
7-48
MODULE 7:
v This is also a lesson for which parents/guardians should be invited in to hear any
guest speakers (i.e., CERRA’s Program Facilitators, specialists, or local high school
counselor) speak about college selections, financing, applications, scholarships, etc.).
I Can Plan for a Successful Future
v Students may invite parents/guardians or community members into their class to
discuss the various college experiences they had. One parent/guardian might be able
to explain that an associate degree earned at a two-year college enabled him to get the
job he wanted. Another parent/guardian might explain how technical college provided
him with a trade certificate to gain employment. Still another might explain why he
chose a military college, why she chose an all-girls liberal arts college, why he
selected a historically black state-supported college, and why he went to a small
church-affiliated college. Parents/guardians who completed college while rearing a
family or working full-time could share valuable time-management and motivational
techniques. It will be important (if such a panel is formed) that no value judgments
are made, leaving a parent/guardian feeling as if his college experience was not as
good as another's. Different schools are needed for different personalities and goals.
