Lesson 7.F.
College: The First Steps
LESSON TYPE: Required (YL, S)
SUPPLIES/EQUIPMENT:
v crayons
v paper
v colored markers
v How Not to Decide on the College for You
v Writing Activity Sheet
STANDARD:
Students will establish viable goals, including attending and graduating from college.
Students will identify characteristics of colleges to consider when selecting a postsecondary school.
ACTIVITIES:
1. Begin by asking students to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of going to
college. If you feel comfortable, you might talk about when you or someone you
know set your goal of obtaining a college degree. What do you know now that you
wish you’d known then?
2. Remind students that many people their age do not think that going to college is a
realistic goal they can achieve because of finances, family circumstances, grades, etc.
Tell them that most students who do reasonably well in high school today can go to
college. Review the different kinds of colleges in most states and offer examples in
your own state:
v two-year junior college (associate degree)
v technical college (trade certificate or two-year degree)
v business college (usually a trade certificate)
v small/medium four-year private college
v public four-year college
v public university with undergraduate and graduate programs
Tell them that many students attend college with federal or state grants that don’t
have to be paid back. These grants don’t always pay for everything. Sometimes
students get scholarships, but they also get student loans and college work-study,
