Lesson 7.D. Set Some Goals LESSON TYPE: Mandatory (YL, S) STUDENT HANDOUT(S): v v v v Taking a Look at Yourself Tips for Improving Yourself Keeping Score – Progress on My School Writing Activity Sheet v Set A Goal! v Setting Goals: Setting Your Brain in Motion STANDARD: Students will establish viable goals, including attending and graduating from college. Students will analyze the importance of setting goals. Brainstorm, identify, and write their short-term and long-term goals. ACTIVITIES: 1. Begin the class by playing some lively music with a good beat. Display “Set a Goal” on your Smart Board, Team Board, Promethean Board, etc. and ask students to read it with you with rhythmic expression. Allow them to clap softly, beat, snap their fingers and/or do motions to it if they like. Divide the class into three groups. v Have all the students say in unison the first line. v Group one will say line two v Group two will say line three v Group three will say line four v All will say line five (Encourage them to use expression, motions, etc.) You may want to do a couple of rounds or have groups exchange lines. An alternative would be to use rap background rhythms (Make a CD of rhythms) and make a rap out of the “Set a Goal” poem.
