DESCRIPTOR: ACTIVITIES: As middle school students struggle to find their own identity, they often fail to understand the importance of responsible decision making at home and at school. The students will assess how responsible they are in their decisions and actions. 1. Ask the students how they would rate themselves on dependability. (You may want to use a rating scale of 0 – 5; 0 being not dependable at all and 5 being extremely dependable). Can they always be counted on to follow through when they make a decision or commitment to do something? Ask them why it’s important that people can depend on you to do something you have been asked to do or decided you wanted to do. Let them share with a Think-Pair-Share partner. 2. Distribute copies of the quiz, “How Responsible Are You?” 3. Once students have completed the quiz, give them a copy of the “Check Out Your Responsibility Profile” handout. Explain how they are to total their points. 4. Allow them to read and share their responsibilities profile with a partner. Have each pair answer the following questions: v Do you feel the profile is accurate for you? Why or why not? v What are the pitfalls or problems that you may have when it comes to being responsible? v What can you do about them?
