4. Divide the class into two groups – The Pros and The Cons. Give The Pros a copy of the “Pros of Teaching” handout and The Cons a copy of the “Cons of Teaching” handout. 5. Give all the students a copy of the “Sample Opening Statements, Arguments, and Closing Statements” handout. For best results, each group should consist of at least five students. (In the event of a class fewer than ten, you may have students create a visual presentation of the pros and cons.) 6. Using the “Debate Guidelines” resource, discuss the procedures to use when having a debate. 7. Instruct each group to delegate the tasks necessary to develop… a) an opening statement b) an argument c) a closing statement 10. Each group will present opening statements (3 minutes each) and answer questions from the opposing side (1 minute each). 11. Each group will present arguments (3 minutes each), and answer questions from the opposing side (1 minute each). 12. Each group will have two opportunities to offer rebuttals (2 minutes each). 13. Each group will present closing statements (3minutes each). 14. Give each student a copy of the “Debate Evaluation Form” to complete after the debate. 15. After the debate, discuss whether student views have been altered.     ASSESSMENT: Choose one or both of the following means of assessment: 1. The class debates will be assessed using the “Debate Evaluation Form.” 2. The students will write an individual journal entry about teaching as a career, stating which pros of teaching are most attractive to them and why or which cons of teaching makes them doubtful they will teach and why.
