The Basic Components of a Lesson Plan
First choose a concept or skill you would like the students to learn. Then include the following
components in your lesson plan:
Objective
An objective of a lesson tells what the students are expected to know once the lesson has been
taught. It is usually written this way: "The student will be able to...."
Procedure
The procedure is the sequential order of ideas, which will be presented to the students. This
process should include the following steps:
v Introduce the lesson by describing how the new information fits into what the students
already know. If the information is a process, demonstrate how it is like another process
(e.g., folding a paper plane can be related to origami or following directions for putting
something together).
v Involve the students in the lesson process. This can be accomplished by sharing the
information (lecturing) and asking questions; a reading assignment may be given in the form
of a handout and then discussed; audio/visual aids may be used; the students could work in
small groups, individually, or as a class.
v Model the process by showing the students how it is done. It is important that the students
see your demonstration as well as hear your explanation.
v Provide an opportunity for the students to practice the new process or to use the new
information. Make sure that there is a way to check whether or not the students understand
the process.
v Check to see whether the objective has been met. This may be done through an informal
question and answer session at the end of the lesson or by having the students demonstrate
what has been learned.
Materials/ Curriculum Resources
v List any materials required for the lesson.
v These would also include any special items like equipment, books, or activity sheets.
Assessment (Optional for ProTeam Assignment)
How will student progress be measured for the objective?
You can choose to create an assessment for the students – assessments do not have to be a pen
and paper test. You can have them perform a task demonstrating their understanding.
