DESCRIPTORS:
Students will identify rewards and challenges of teaching.
Students will evaluate positive and negative aspects of the teaching profession.
ACTIVITIES:
1. Prior arrangements should be made so that each student is placed in a classroom
setting to observe for at least one class period. Choose effective teachers who will
serve as good role models. Consider placing students in primary, elementary, middle
and even high school classes. (See “Planning Tips for Successful Classroom
Observation Experiences.”)
2. Provide students with a “Classroom Observation Data Form” to give focus to the
observation and to provide a place to record what they see during the observation.
Discuss the handout—making sure students clearly understand what is expected of
them.
3. Once observations are completed, allow time for students to share the information
gathered on their “Classroom Observation Data Forms” and process their
experiences. Be prepared to clear up any misconceptions or misinformation about
teaching that might emerge during the discussion.
