STANDARD:
Students will recognize the characteristics of effective teaching.
Students will identify the roles and responsibilities of teachers.
Through guided reflection, students will recognize the main roles and responsibilities of a
teacher. The student will understand that being a teacher requires many more facets than
just teaching a curriculum and obtaining school supplies. Students will recognize the
many facets of teaching and spearhead a service-learning project.
1. Have a student read the poem, “We Are Responsible for Children.” (Prior to reading
the poem aloud, the selected student should have practiced reading the poem aloud to
the teacher.) Have students reflect in their journals on how teachers help the haves
and the have-nots.
SERVICE LEARNING OPPORTUNITY:
Students need to work as a class to formulate a service-learning plan that would help
those in the school or community who are less fortunate. This might be a canned food
drive, blanket drive, etc. It is important that students develop and implement a servicelearning project at this time. This project could involve the entire school.
After completing the service-learning project, students should reflect in their journals on
how the community benefited from their project. Each ProTeam student should include
how he or she benefited from the service learning experience. A celebration of some type
