Making a Collage
What’s a Collage?
A collage is a piece of artwork created by you that conveys a message of some sort.
Collages can include just about anything that can be glued on a sheet of poster or butcher
paper. You can add coloring, drawings, etc. to make it attractive and representative of
you.
Look in magazines, newspapers, etc., to find words and images that mean something
special to you. Choose images that represent you in some way – either the way people see
you, the way you want them to see you, or perhaps your secret self. Glue these on your
silhouettes.
You can layer things by gluing them partially on top of each other. You can let things
peek out from behind other pictures or words. If you’ve never seen a collage, ask your
media specialist if she can find one for you to examine.
How to Make Your Silhouette
To make the collage posters, get a large piece of poster paper and fold it in half. Help
each other draw silhouettes of yourselves on surfaces A, C, and D. (Enlist the assistance
of the art department if possible.)

The best way to draw the silhouettes is to tape the poster paper to a wall and project a
light onto the poster surface using an overhead or slide projector. (A LED flashlight or a
flashlight app will also work.) When you stand between the light source and the light, a
friend can trace your shadow on the poster. Repeat the process for surfaces A, C, and D.
If you have paper large enough, you can have someone trace you directly on the paper,
instead of using a projector.
