Students will think more positively about their home and school relationship, their
education, and their future.
DESCRIPTORS:
Students will examine the damaging effects of negative criticism.
Students will demonstrate how positive statements affect themselves and others.
ACTIVITIES:
Note: Students must understand that this activity is not intended to be used for students to
actually name teachers or other adults in the school whom they hear being criticized. Use
the Blueberry rule: Any teacher who is the object of a critical comment should be
referred to as Blueberry.
Part One:
1. As a homework assignment, ask students to spend an entire school day listening for
negative comments they hear others saying about teachers. These comments should
be written down for later use. Do not write down the name of the individual who
made the comment.
Part Two:
1. The next day in class, give students the opportunity to share comments they heard.
Discuss students’ attitudes and teachers’ attitudes about school and education.
Remember to use the “Blueberry Rule.”
