The Four Learning Styles
Some people talk about four ways that we can all use our minds. We will use symbols to help us remember what they are.
The Hand
✍
reminds us that we often learn by touching and examining
things. When we use our hands to learn, we follow directions
and do things step by step. We also like to be sure about the
difference between right and wrong answers. For example,
there is usually a right and a wrong way to put a model plane
together or to solve subtraction problems.
The Heart
!
reminds us that we often learn by relating to things, whether it
is another person or a story we read aloud with our teacher.
When we use our hearts to learn, we have strong feelings
about what we are learning, and we connect it to things that
we know about ourselves. In class, we often like to work with
others, and we care about their feelings.
The Eye
"
reminds us that we often learn by imagining things. When we
use the eye of imagination, we create new things (like stories,
ideas, shapes, or pictures) out of what we already know and
often find ourselves exploring new ways of doing things. We
like being unique.
The Head
reminds us that we often learn by thinking deeply about
things. When we use our heads to learn, we like to learn about
different points of view, to figure out problems, and to explain
the reasons behind answers or ideas. (For example, why a
plant grows, or why Sam acts the way she does in the first
story we read)
Each of us uses all four of these-the hand, the heart, the head, and the eye--to learn. We also each have a favorite way
of learning, just as Sam had a favorite position in soccer. But it is important to use all four styles, too, just as Bobby
found out that he learned best when he learned in four different ways.
