DESCRIPTORS: Students will identify the special needs and exceptionality of learners with the goal of developing respect for people with disabling conditions. Students will examine the educational services for those with disabilities. ACTIVITIES: MODULE 3: STANDARD: I Can Be Different v Disability Reflections Sheet v I’m Special Interview/Observation Sheet v Writing Activity Sheet 1. Begin the lesson by asking the students to recall observing someone who had a disability and was unable to use his hands or a blind person unable to see. Remind the students that when one is not able to do something, then he is disabled. 2. Have the students think of all the ways a person may be disabled. List all the examples on the board. Ask them to take a few minutes to categorize the examples by deciding if they represent a social, physical, or mental disability. 3. Engage the students in discussion about the special education a person with a specific disability might require at school. Be sure to help the students distinguish between the three broad categories mentioned above as well as specific types such as LD (Learning Disabled), VI (Visually Impaired), HI (Hearing Impaired), ED (Emotionally Disabled), etc. 4.
