ACTIVITIES:
1. Begin by demonstrating greetings from different cultures: shaking hands, kissing
cheeks, hugging, giving high fives, bowing, etc. Ask the class to observe the
similarities and differences in your actions. You may also want to display the
“Welcome in All Languages” sheet. (They are all greetings, but they are done
differently in different cultures. The greetings of one culture may look quite strange to
members of another.) If you have students from different cultural backgrounds in the
class, you may want to allow them to demonstrate their cultures’ greetings. You also
may want to take a moment to discuss what we mean by the word culture. Discuss how
cultural traits can affect the way we feel about people from various cultures. (For
example, we may feel that people of a certain culture are too pushy or too intimate if
they hug or kiss us as a greeting. People who bow their heads and drop their eyes in
greeting may be viewed as meek or submissive by another culture.) Explain that today
they will begin an activity in which they will explore cultural differences.
2. Divide the class into four groups and assign them to different areas of the room.
