Writing Activity Sheet
Students will examine the characteristics of effective communication.
Students will identify and practice effective listening and speaking skills.
Students will demonstrate the value of eliminating rumors.
ACTIVITIES:
Just as positive affirmations enhance good communication, untrue and/or negative
messages spread through rumors can undermine effective communication skills. The
students will demonstrate through role-playing the value of effective communication and
its role in eliminating rumors.
1. To introduce this activity, you may want to play a quick game of Rumor/Telephone.
Have students sit in a circle. Ask one student to whisper something in the ear of the
student sitting next to him. Then pass the information from person to person until it
gets back around the circle to the student who started the game. Discuss how
accurate the information was once it had been passed around the room. Talk about
how rumors get started.
2. Select three student volunteers to leave the room.
3. Give the rest of the students a copy of “The Party Story.” Instruct the students to
listen while you tell the story to Volunteer #1 who has been outside the room.
Instruct the students to keep a record of the omissions and additions to the story made
by each volunteer.
