b) Destructive criticism is intended to degrade or destroy confidence. Jealous or insecure people usually deliver destructive criticism as an insult trying to hurt another person. 2. Help students understand how some people learn to ignore destructive criticism and use constructive criticism to motivate them to become better. Give examples of celebrities or famous people in history, who seemed to be able to handle criticism well. 3. Discuss the student handout and have students role play situations using both types of criticism. 4. Have students reflect upon constructive criticism they received, and respond to the writing activity prompt. ASSESSMENT: FAMILY INVOLVEMENT: Have students interview a parent or guardian and ask the following questions: v Did you ever neglect to follow constructive criticism and later regretted that you didn’t follow the advice? v Were you ever motivated from constructive criticism you were given? Explain. PROTEAM DREAMQUEST CURRICULUM 2-29 MODULE 2: Option: Have students investigate further how celebrities handle criticism (ignore, speak back, motivate) and discuss their approach. I Can Communicate Instruct the students to search for reviews about their favorite celebrity athlete, actor, singer, or writer on the internet, in the newspaper, or even on television. Have them highlight or point out less than flattering statements or criticism; stress that everyone has to deal with criticism, regardless of their degree of popularity.
