Eye contact, head nods, smiles. v Listening for the central theme of the message. v Hearing before evaluating. v Paraphrasing what was heard. Putting what you hear into your own words, "I heard you say that...." 8. Rank the effective listening skills according to which ones are most important. Discuss. ASSESSMENT: Students will write a journal entry reflecting on how it felt not to be listened to and how it affected their delivery of information. FAMILY INVOLVEMENT: Have the students interview their parents/guardians, asking them the following questions: v Who is the best listener you know? Why? v How do you feel when you are saying something important to someone, and he is obviously not listening? v Tell about a time when it was hard for you to listen to someone else. v Tell about a time when you were glad someone else listened carefully to you. v What is the importance of listening to one another in the family?
