STANDARD:
Students will examine the characteristics of effective communication.
DESCRIPTORS:
Students will analyze the role of social skills in nonverbal communication.
Students will use a variety of communication styles for various audiences.
ACTIVITIES:
1. Begin the class by showing a video clip(s) from a TV show with the volume completely
off. Let the students try to guess what’s happening from the gestures and actions.
2. Explain to students that non-verbal communication is as important as verbal
communication. Often it’s our actions and not our words that others see as being odd
or cool. Often how they see us will determine if they leave us out of their group or
include us.
3. Give students a copy of the “Body Language Pre-Test.” Ask students to answer the
questions. After the students have answered the questions, distribute the “What Subtle
Signals Are You Sending” for them to analyze their results.
4. Introduce the concept of social cues –– the little non-verbal messages that are being
sent around us all the time. It’s how people tell us how to act in a situation. For
example, smiling calls for a friendly response, frowning says stay away, walking
