STUDENT HANDOUT(S):

Students will examine the characteristics of effective communication.
Students will identify and practice effective listening and speaking skills.
ACTIVITIES:
1. Ask students to think about times they have turned on the television or radio, then
proceeded to read, talk on the phone, or engage in some other activity that required
their conscious attention. Were they listening to the radio or television or just hearing
it as they carried out their other activity?
Discuss the difference between hearing and listening. Explain that the students will be
involved in several activities that will require them to exaggerate poor listening
habits.
2. Divide the group into dyads (pairs). Distribute a copy of “Doing Your ABC’s” to one
person in each dyad. The other dyad member should not see the sheet. Those
students who do not have the ABC listening sheet are designated "Speaker Number
One" and are instructed to start talking to their partners about any subject they wish
for approximately three minutes.
(Students may have some difficulty talking for this length of time without direction, but part of the
exercise is to give students the experience of talking on demand. They might explain how to perform a
task or play a game they're familiar with. Students might also tell the listener the plot of a familiar TV
episode, movie, video, fairy tale or book.)
