Lesson 1.B. What Makes Me Unique LESSON TYPE: Mandatory (YL, S) SUPPLIES/EQUIPMENT: v colored pencils v cardstock (optional for nametags) v journals STUDENT HANDOUT(S): v I AM Handout v Writing Activity Sheet Students will evaluate themselves as individuals and identify their roles in society. Students will identify the origins of their names and what they mean to them. ACTIVITIES: 1. Introduce this activity by explaining that names are something that we truly own; they don't get old and die, they can't be taken from us, they are wholly ours. In most cases, the first thing our parents do for us when we are born is to give us a name to separate us from others and make us unique. Discuss the importance of a person’s name and how it is different, even if someone else has the same name. Emphasize that names are very special, and a person demonstrates pride in himself by the way he writes or says his name. People show respect for others when they call them by the names they like. Give the students a copy of the “I AM...” handout. 2. Allow students fifteen minutes to complete this handout. Ask them to draw/write the name they want to be called in class. (First name, middle name, nickname, etc.) Invite the students to decorate the name in any style or color(s) they like that represents what they want other people to know about them. 3. After the allotted time, divide students into groups and ask them to explain what the signs, symbols, and colors on their handouts represent. 4. Create a wall display using the handouts. As an additional activity, you might have the students work together as a group to design a ProTeam name tag. They may put them on their desks when guests visit.
