Students will evaluate themselves as diverse individuals, learners, and community
members.
ACTIVITIES:
1. Give each student a copy of the “Steppin’ Out” student handout. Provide colored
markers, scissors, and tape.
2. Give the class 20 to 25 minutes so that each student can design an original athletic
shoe. On this shoe, he should write words, symbols, signs, phrases, or sentences that
explain why he is unique and special. Try not to prompt the students if you can avoid
it; encourage them to be serious and think about their talents, skills, qualities, and
interests. Encourage the students to color their athletic shoes and come up with a
trademark name of their own invention. Have the students cut the shoes out and write
their names on the back.
3. When the allotted time is up, divide the class into groups of four or five, and ask the
students to introduce themselves to other members of the group, using the
information on their athletic shoes. Have each member of the small group initial the
back of the shoe.
