What’s in a Name?

Introduce this activity by telling students there is more to a name than we often realize.
Then share the story behind your name. It could be how you "got" your name, who
named you, what and why, or even how your name may have had a positive influence in
your life or in the life of someone closely related.
1. Discuss how people get their names and the difference between a given names and a
nickname.
2. Divide the students into groups and have them share the stories behind their name and
what their names mean, if they know it.
3. Have students introduce a group member by giving his/her name and briefly telling
something about how he/she got his/her name.
4. Students are to complete “The Name Game” handout as their classmates are being
introduced by writing each student’s name and something personal that will allow
them to remember the name.
ASSESSMENT:
Students will research their surnames and include this information in their journals.
Students might include the following information in their journals and possibly share
with other classmates:
