flip charts. You can make these with butcher paper or newsprint. One large sheet
hangs down the front and is attached to another large sheet on the back with tape.)
4. Divide the class into small groups of four or five and ask each student to introduce
himself to the other group members using the information from his slices of bread.
As each individual completes his introduction, have the group give the SelfDiscovery Sub a name. The name should be something positive like The Caring Club
Sub, The Helpful Hoagie, The Radiant Reuben, The Terrific Tuna, etc.
5. Allow time for students to place the “filling” in their subs. Examples for the filling
include:
v Lettuce: funny story, pictures
v Cheese: favorite things, top 5 or 10 list of facts to know about me
v Meat: goals, wish list
Choose one or both of the following means of assessment:
1. The students will give the name chosen for their sub and explain why they feel it is
appropriate or inappropriate for them. Allow students to decorate and/or color their
sub slices and filling. Staple the sub components together. A checkered picnic cloth
stapled on the bulletin board with a paper picnic basket placed on the corner of it will
provide an interesting display area for the Self-Discovery Subs.
2. (Optional) For homework the students will write one thing in their journals that they
learned about themselves during this class. At the next class meeting, have each
student read what he has written. Make affirming comments that will encourage
students to continue to explore themselves and their relationships with others as the
class continues.
FAMILY INVOLVEMENT:
Explain to the students that they will be sharing with their classmates some knowledge
about their families.
v Give each student two slices of Family Sub Bread (slices #3 and #4).
v Ask the student and his family members to write words, phrases, or sentences that
capture what they know and wish to know about their family. For example, family
members might list names of brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents
and great-grandparents, include careers of family members, and cities where relatives
live, etc.
