STUDENT HANDOUT(S):
Students will evaluate themselves as individuals and identify their roles in society.
DESCRIPTORS:
Students will formulate questions and seek answers about themselves and their families.
Students will identify their personality traits and showcase those traits via various media.
ACTIVITIES:
1. Introduce the Self Discovery activity. (You may want to create your own Self
Discovery Sub and share that with the class as an example.) Give each student #1 and
#2 slices of Sub Sandwich Bread, a colored marker, and two strips of masking tape.
2. Give the class ten minutes to write words, phrases, or sentences that capture what
they know and wish to know about themselves. (For example, a student might write
"I'm a good basketball player" or "I like to read" on slice #1 and "I'd like to know
what my friend really thinks about me" or "I'd like to know what I'll be doing ten
years from now" on slice #2. Try not to prompt students if you can avoid it; the
exercise is more valuable if they write from within.)
3. When time is up, have each student tape the “What I Know about Myself” on the
front of his chest and ask another student to tape the “What I Would Like to Know
about Myself” on his back, making a sandwich. (Some students, especially girls, may
be uncomfortable taping the small sheets to themselves. If so, have students use oldfashioned sandwich boards made with very large sheets similar to the size used with
