As in the Pre-Prep and Junior Schools we recognise the need to teach boys and girls separately for most subjects and in each year there is one class of boys and one class of girls. The progress of each pupil is carefully monitored throughout their time with us and appropriate support or extension programmes are implemented. Pupils at KS3 follow a full curriculum. In Remove (Y7) this includes thinking skills and first aid and also study skills seminars. In Lower IV (Y8) most pupils have the opportunity to study Spanish as well as French. Towards the end of Upper IV (Y9) and in consultation with staff and parents, pupils select the optional subjects they wish to study at GCSE to complement the compulsory core of English, mathematics and science. It is Mayville’s policy to enter all pupils for their GCSE providing they have completed the course of study, including any coursework element. Our results are therefore a true reflection of the efforts of pupils and staff, which over the past ten years have been well above the national average. Homework is set each day throughout the Senior School to extend and consolidate learning in the classroom. Our children enjoy a range of visits and field trips within the local area which aim to enhance the learning that takes place in the classroom. The cost of these visits is included in the fees. Pupils are encouraged to look to the world beyond school and there are optional visits for which a charge is made. Some of these trips are abroad and include skiing, a visit to a Normandy chateau and excursions designed to extend the scope of GCSE courses. At Mayville we believe that confidence is the central building block to success in future life. Our commitment to Global Rock Challenge is just one such example. Membership of our own St. John Ambulance cadet unit (which includes assisting at public duties) and access to the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme provides opportunities to develop teamwork and leadership skills. We stage our own dramatic productions and there is an annual pupil-led inter-house Creative Arts Competition. “Relationships between staff and pupils are outstanding. Mutual respect is the norm.” ISC Inspection report 11
