Think about your favourite smell. Take
a moment, close your eyes and let the
memory of that scent seep into your
airways and permeate your mind.
Is it the smell of freshly cut grass? Maybe it is
the deliciously intoxicating aroma of a fresh
cup of coffee? Most of us can immediately
identify at least one smell that makes us smile.
Sometimes those smells can take us back to
a time in the past – that undistinguishable
yet familiar whiff will hit you, and suddenly
you are overcome by a feeling of nostalgia
that could only be described as childhood.
The memory of a favourite smell (whether it
is conscious or unconscious) is far more powerful
than you think. Smells have the power to trigger
intense emotions and memories and that’s
why, very often, our favourite smells invoke
feelings of comfort and happiness within us.
