sensible pricing and a relaxed feeling, the combination seems to have worked this year with a really diverse range of formal groups choosing the property.

4/ The Four Points By Sheraton Sydney

This is a little-known property, tucked away at the edge of the divide between the CBD and Darling Harbour, yet formal groups seem to flock there in droves for a variety of reasons. It does tick the boxes for what people most need. Location, capacity, décor, courtyard outdoors, price and availability. This has seen the Four Points a strong player in the top five every year, and for eight years running, was number one. It’s easy to see why when you visit this awesome property and check it out yourself.

3/ Hilton Sydney

Hilton has been a hotel icon in Sydney since this year’s formal goer’s parents were born, however there was a huge gap while the property was closed for years undergoing one of the biggest and most costly refurbishments in Australian hospitality history. Since re-opening only a few years ago, people have been amazed at the size, capacity and overall modern luxury that the new Hilton has produced. With ballrooms on two different levels, able to cater for 100-800, the Hilton brand is uncompromising on value and quality. Securing this top three position for this season is no shock.

2/ The Sebel Pier One

The Sebel Pier One has an interesting background. The function space on the ground floor of the building was previously known as the “Waters Edge”, which was not operated by the hotel. This had the reputation for being one of Sydney’s “cheap’n’nasty” formal venues under the previous operators. However all of that changed last year when the hotel reclaimed control of the venue and spent millions on one of the most luxurious upgrade refurbishment projects we’ve seen in a decade. Today the “Water Room” at the Sebel is one of Sydney’s most breathtaking and most desired formal venues. The service and décor is outstanding, the views breathtaking and, despite the price being right up there, this year has clinched the second position on the list for popularity.

Top 10 Formal Venues 2013

...this property has

managed to

attract larger

than normal attention this year by offering some clever variations on the formal theme with stand-up and multi-room formals that are perfect for Year 10 semi-formal seekers who want something a bit more casual and different. This is a tactic sure to be adopted by other properties; however it’s gained this hotel an enviable position in the top 10 this time around.

6/ Shangri-La Hotel Sydney

“Shang” as we love to call it, has always been a strong contender for the Sydney formals market. It has one of the largest pillar-less ballrooms in the city with a huge pre-function lounge area and breathtaking décor as you walk through the lobby. They’ve gone through an expensive refurbishment approaching this year’s peak formal season, and this, coupled with a sensible price point, has yielded good results for the property this year.

5/ Mercure Sydney

Mercure is a less formal, kind of funky, venue with a versatile range of function spaces, lots of natural light and a huge terrace / balcony area overlooking the bustling Central and Broadway streetscape. With a capacity that suits the widest range of formal groups, sensible pricing and a relaxed feeling, the combination seems to have worked this year with a really diverse range of formal groups choosing the property.
