NIGERIAN YOUTHS AND
NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT
The struggle for Nigerian Independence after Macaulay's death was proudly led by
Obafemi Awolowo, who then, was 37years old, Balewa, 34 years old and Enahoro was
27years old. Youth in Nigeria includes citizens aged 18–35 years. The term ‘National
Development’ is very comprehensive. It includes all aspects of the life of an individual
and the nation, ranging from politics, sports, economy and industry, and so on.
First, youths should be involved in the political life of the country to foster better
governance. In events of revolution in developed countries, youths were noted to
be at the fore-front. According to the Journal of the American Revolution, the
average age of signers of the US Declaration of Independence was 44. About
40% were 30 years and below.
In addition, youths amongst themselves should engage in consciousness
formation. Again, social mobilisation which involves young persons networking
themselves into groups that can positively influence administration and be
involved in the struggle for power is necessary.
However, I shall conclude by stressing that the Nigerian youth need to be more
focused, creative and disciplined, if they are to actually become
real agents of change in the country.
