Referendum

A referendum gave the people the oppotunity to approve or veto a law passed by the legislature.

There are three types of referendum: the legislative referendum which allows the legislature to propose a measure for the public to approve. The second is the popular referendum - this is a measure that will appear on the ballot as a result of a voter petition drive. Finally, the third type is the advisory referendum which asks a question in order to retrieve voter's opinions; this referendum is rarely used.

Direct initiatives, if approved, will go directly on ballots while the indirect initatives must first be submitted to the legistature.
