Theodore Roosevelt, the 26th President of the United States, is considered the first modern President America had ever seen. Roosevelt's focus improving poor living conditions and foreign policies separated him from many other Presidents before him. He felt public health was an issue worth investing in. Although Roosevelt had a wealthy upbringing, he also pushed for federal regulation of businesses. In 1890 9 percent of the population controlled 71 percent of the nation's wealth.
