Lewis Hine

"There is work that profits children, and there is work that brings profit only to employers. The object of employing children is not to train them, but to get high profits from their work”. These are the words of Lewis Hine, who, as a schoolteacher and photographer, felt strongly about the mistreatment of children in the workplace. Because of this, he decided to turn to photography full time working for the National Child Labor Committee. He would simply take pictures of children in all sorts of jobs and tried to portray them as honestly as possible. (National Archives 2017)
