Upton Sinclair a novelist, journalist, and political activist is a new and upcoming writer. His latest piece The Jungle, a novel set among Chicago packinghouse workers, exposed the filthy and horrible working conditions in the stockyards and the meat packing industry. Because of this, tighter meat inspecting rules were passed and the Food and Drug act was established. The FDA is still in use to this day. The Jungle is a story that exposes the truth of working conditions and is a must read for all advocates of a good novel. Ida B. Tarbell is another writer who wrote “History of the Standard Oil Company”(1904) which documented how John D. Rockefeller removed out competitors in unfair business practices. Ida Tarbell also wrote He Knew Lincoln, Father Abraham and In Lincolns chair. Jacob Riis is another journalist who wants to expose the truth that many Americans do not know about.
