City Commisioners

Attention! This past summer (1900), was a very tragic day in history due to the hurricane that struck the Gulf of Mexico which unleashed a massive tidal wave on Galveston, Texas. In order to cope with this disaster, leading businessmen convinced the state legislature to replace the mayor-council government with a small board of commissioners. Therefore, each commissioner would be elected and each would possess a different responsibility for a different city department. This was an exceptional idea because it gave voters a more accessible method of identifying and holds accountable those responsible for city services. Overall, the creation of city commissions proved very effective in the rebuilding Galveston.By 1917, it is projected that nearly 500cities wil adopt the commission form of government.

If you live the cities of Houston, Oakland, Kansas City, Denver, and Buffalo be expecting city commissioners.
