Ginai Seabron becomes the 1st Black Female Nanoscientist in Virginia

Ginai Seabron just made history as the first Black woman to become a Nanoscientist in the state of Virginia . Seabron , 22 , was pleasantly surprised when she discovered that she was the first Black woman to graduate with a Bachelor of Science from Virginia Tech ’ s Nanoscience program , and spoke with Program Success Magazine about how she verified the news .
“ We talked to the department head and he looked it up and confirmed it ,” said Seabron . She was also featured on her school ’ s social media platforms , giving students advice . Seabron ’ s mom , Sherita , also shared how she encouraged her daughter , “ Pray with her , tell her she can make it , never give up . That wasn ’ t an option for her ,” Sherita said . Ginai Seabron will be taking a year to intern at Virginia Tech before she goes back to school .

Nanoscience is a relatively new branch of the physical sciences and is ideal for scientists who want to focus in on the small details . Nanoscientists often specialise in the industrial or engineering fields , pure research or medical nanotechnology .
Nanoscience is the study of the infinitely small – the atoms and sub-atomic particles that make up all matter in the universe . To give you an idea of the scales nanoscientists work with , there are a billion nanometres in a metre , so that ’ s ten million nanometres in a centimetre and a million nanometres in a millimetre . Nanoscientists study and seek to exploit the properties of substances on this scale to create new types of materials and make extraordinary advances in areas including biology , chemistry , materials science and physics . Possible developments could be a mobile phone that never needs to be charged or materials that can withstand a rocket ’ s reentry into the earth ’ s atmosphere .
