Breastfeeding-Benefits :
Breastfeeding results in a major improvement with infant and maternal health outcomes , which impacts the industrialized and developing world . Breastfeeding provides a substance rich in vital nutrients , such as essential fatty acids , vitamins , minerals , proteins , and amino acids that is highly related with improved cognitive functioning , language development and overall neurological development . Breast milk contain docosahexaenoic acid ( DHA ) omega-3 fats and eicosapentenoic acid ( EPA ) fats which may reduce the risk of mental complications
such as depression and bipolar disorders mainly seen among women .
Breastfeeding may also provide a biological benefit by decreasing the blood pressure and pain of the mother by utilizing oxytocin and prolactin , which may also strengthen mother to infant bonding . Breast milk may have a protective effect against comorbidities such as diarrhea , urinary tract infection , insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus , celiac disease , crohn disease , childhood cancer , leukemia , recurrent otitis media , allergy and obesity .
Recommendations for Breastfeeding :
A healthy recommended feeding schedule from the breast is a total time of 15-mintes each feeding every 3-hours , breast can be alternated each feeding up to 2-months of age . Then breastfeeding schedule should be 15-mintes each feeding every 4-hours with alternating breast each feeding up to 4-months of age . Guardians can start fruits and vegetables at 4-months of age and consider moving from breast milk to infant formula .
A healthy recommended feeding schedule using baby milk such as Similac soy isomil , Gerber good start soy , Enfamil , Enspire and Nutramigen would be 2 to 3 ounces of breast milk every three hours from the first day of birth until 2-months of age . Followed by 4 ounces every four hours until 4-months of age and then 4 ounces twice a day until 12-months of age . It is essential for each feeding session to last for only 15-minutes . Complementary foods such as fruits and vegetables should be started at 4 months of age for three to four times a day . It is very essential for parents to know that just because a baby is sucking their thumb or pacifier it does not mean their hungry . Baby sucking is a pleasure zone , even after feeding a baby will began to suck their thumb or pacifier . Over feeding can lead to baby being overweight resulting in fat folds that can be seen under the neck , under the arm , at the elbows , at the knees , on the stomach and even at the feet . Theses fat folds can trap heat and moisture leading to yeast infections . Overfeeding increases the risk of heart attacks and strokes .
