The Order of the Knights of Pythias is an international fraternal organization which was founded in Washington , D . C ., February 19 , 1864 by Justus H . Rathbone . The first African American Pythian lodge was organized in Vicksburg , Mississippi , April 1880 by Dr . T . W . Stringer , and known as Lightfoot Lodge NO . I . The primary objective of this fraternal organization is to promote friendship among men and to relieve suffering in our society . The Knights of Pythias organization is based upon the lessons of the familiar story of Damon and Pythias , two great friends whose bond went beyond that of mutual trust and respect . As a result of this dynamic friendship , Aundra Bryant the principles of this order , friendship , charity and benevolence are taught among the membership . It was not until the Negro Moines , Iowa is the acting Supreme lodges received an executive order from Congress that they were Chancellor who replaced the late recognized by the other white pythian lodges .

This great organization is a charitable one which supports the Sickle Cell Foundation , Habitat for Humanity , American Heart Association and Little League Baseball Teams . The Knights of Pythias participates in mentoring programs at local schools and sponsors scholarships to recipients at Colleges and Universities .
