The Construct of Dr . Mary McLeod Bethune Dr . Evelyn Bethune Daytona Beach , Florida November 2014D
I ' ' at is a " construct "? Pronounced " CON-struct ", with the emphasis on " con ", in the social sciences , it is often necessary to measure the abstract , those
things which we cannot see or touch . ( FAITH ) We measure these ideas by describing specific qualities that when taken together , describe the construct .
" A construct is another word for a complex psychological concept . For example , " intelligence " is a construct - an idea , a part of what makes us human , which is made up of lots of smaller ideas ." Michael - Host
of The Psych Files podcast
For the purpose of analyzing and understanding the methodology of Dr . Mary McLeod Bethune , we must first understand the complexities of how she came to be who she was and how those observations translate into relevance today , even in her physical absence . We look at the specifics of how she developed and how she utilized her skills to become an agent for change in the 20 th
Century and beyond . " The Mary McLeod Bethune Effect ™ " is like observing the ripple effect of skipping a stone across a pond . On the surface we see the ripples but what is the effect under the surface ?
Much of what " makes us human " is becoming harder and harder to find . Those things that make us respect life and feel compassion for our fellow human while remaining capable of achieving at the highest level , persisting against all odds while being mindful to care for others , have great value . Yet because these concepts are not tangible they are often perceived to have no value . Dr . Mary McLeod Bethune , while fully engaged in being " a mover and shaker " at the height of her existence , remained strong in her faith in God and deeply concerned with the quality of life for her people in particular and humanity at large .
The premise for building / rebuilding a strong community with high moral and ethical standards can very easily be anchored in the Life of Dr . Mary McLeod Bethune . The very construct of her being was to set an example of excellence that was the norm , not the exception . The ideals that made her do the things she did were deemed unusual for a woman of her back ground . Dr . Mary Jane McLeod Bethune was a visionary who made the impossible a reality . She wanted to be the standard bearer for our people , Black people , so that negative precepts relating to us , were diminished or alleviated completely . She was willing to put everything on the line but in a way that was not haphazard but structured , organized and exceptionally affective . Her methods brought results and raised the standard of living not just for Black people but for all people . The Construct validity of Dr . Mary McLeod Bethune is resident in the visible effect her life still has on American culture in 2012 even though she died in 1955 .
