Dr . Carter G . Woodson , as well as being an educator was also the founder of Black History Week , established February 7 , 1926 . This led to Black History Month . The observation of such theme is said to have gone back to 1915 with Dr . Woodson before he created the organization , The Study of Negro Life and History .
The first time I read , ‘ The Mis-Education of the Negro ’ was around 1992 . At the time I was incarcerated , serving a 4-to-12 year sentence . 20 years old , with four years into my new-found search for self-discovery , as a person of African descent . Sometimes , we know what we don ’ t know .
As a teen , I realized race plays a very important part in American life . Yet , I had no guidance on how the structure of it all worked . But , my interest would bring me down the path of study , years later . 20 years old , and already familiar with the teachings of the Black Liberation Army ( BLA ), the Black Panther Party ( BPP ), Nation of Islam ( NOI ), the Nation of Gods & Earth ’ s ( 5 % Percenters ), and Moorish Science Temple . Once reading the introduction pages within ‘ The Mis-Education of the Negro ,’ I immediately understood that all these various organizations were seeking to re-educate people of African descent in various areas , to combat the psychological manipulation experienced via societal policies , and education .
As ‘ Mis-Education of the Negro ’ points out , the person of African descent who becomes educated through public grade school , and goes on to universities invested in the philosophy of westernized thinking , and principles , becomes an individual who develops contempt toward their own people . This is especially true of those deemed to be less educated within the structure of what it means to be supposedly educated in American society .
