Diversity and Inclusion : Impact on Leadership

Wendy Norfleet , Ph . D . CEO at Norfleet Integrated Solutions
Diversity and inclusion are increasingly becoming crucial elements in building a healthy workplace and fostering creativity , productivity , and competitiveness . The benefits and positive outcomes of having an inclusive and diverse organizational culture are numerous and long-lasting . These benefits include but are not limited to higher retention of employees , a better company image , and a workforce that generates a greater range of solutions and ideas .
Research studies conducted by academic institutions and work carried out by consulting and recruiting firms reveal that companies implementing diversity and inclusion programs generally improve their performance in business compared to companies that do not have these initiatives . This is especially evident when the diversity and inclusion policy of the company is aligned with the overall strategic business plan . When part of the business plan or culture , this alignment and the institutionalization of the programs can be maintained and better supported by leadership . Diversity and inclusion work best when the practices are incorporated into other programs designed to bring value to the organization .
Inclusive Leadership
The responsibilities of leadership and how leaders lead often change . Leadership twenty years ago is different from the current leadership , and it will change in various ways in the next 20 years . The leaders of today are courageous and have impressive interpersonal and collaboration abilities . Many are open-minded and express cultural intelligence , and encourage different perspectives from their own . This mindset lets them create a positive work environment where everyone ’ s voice is heard . These forward and inclusive leaders create the ability to develop the potential of their employees and , in turn , allow the company to achieve more efficient business results .
