So many people were deeply disturbed by what we witnessed occur at the Capitol over the past couple of days . As shocking as these events were , I think it ’ s important to put them in the context of the history of our nation and how violence and intimidation have consistently been used as a tool to discourage and prevent Black folk from voting in order to keep us marginalized . If we can understand this as a pattern of behavior rather than an anomaly , we can develop appropriate responses when these atrocious events happen .
Reflecting on what has happened over the past year , from the George Floyd murder to the insurrection at the Capitol , spurred me to develop and launch my own learning platform called The Black History & Culture Academy , to educate people about African history and literature , African American history and literature and diversity , equity and inclusion .
Taking the first step to knowledge and learning can be a journey to true understanding , allyship and action . Black boxes on Instagram won ’ t change America .
Social media post won ’ t bring about lasting change . The only thing that really brings about significant change is the acknowledgement of what needs to be changed and a plan to make that change happen . Understanding how we got to where we are is an important part of that journey . Like any change that we make in life , the first step involves a long , hard look in the mirror . How exactly did we get to where we are now ? Once we have done that , we need to commit to meaningful and measurable change and create a path of action . It won ’ t happen overnight , but it can happen . We each have a role to play in making our country and the world around us a better place . We are dedicated to promoting online knowledge and awareness of the demands of the ever-changing diversity , equity and inclusion landscape , with a firm foundation in the US historical origins of systemic racism paired with contemporary racial equity concepts and terminology for personal and professional competency .
