JoJo O ’ Neal , of Star 94.5-Orlando , and Hot 99.5-Jacksonville , has been selected as one of the 2021 Black History Month honorees for the City of DeLand . During the month of February , as you drive through the heart of Historic Downtown DeLand , you will see banners with pictures of each honoree hanging from the light fixtures along Woodland Boulevard .

She also is a lung health advocate , traveling across the country with the American Lung Association ( ALA ), and their Airways Clinical Research Centers ( ACRC ), as a member of their Patient Advisory Group , and Community Advisory Board , to offer input on marketing materials , research efforts , and clinical trials for lung patients . In addition , JoJo is a national spokesperson for the American Lung Association ’ s “ My Shot ” campaign , encouraging flu shots for those patients considered to be high-risk due to underlying health conditions .
JoJo recently was invited to join in the conversation with the ALA and the Center for Black Health & Equity to implement ways to make sure the African American underserved communities have ample access to Covid-19 vaccines .

As I look at all the other names on the list , I am so grateful to even be considered worthy of being included in such a prestigious group ! Congratulations to my fellow honorees ! Born and raised in Deland , Florida as Jolene Philpot , “ JoJo ” studied Radio / Television Broadcasting at the University of Central Florida and has been a full-time radio personality since 1984 . She also works part time as a Technical Operator at WFTV Orlando , an ABC affiliate .
Known for her fun-loving , playful personality and genuine love for people , JoJo ’ s “ girl-next-door ” on air delivery has garnered her thousands of social media fans as well , with followers across several platforms like Instagram , Facebook , and Twitter .
JoJo not only works on the radio , but is also a strong community advocate off the air as well . She is involved in many projects to help improve conditions for the community by educating people on the educational , economic , and financial resources and social services available to meet their needs .
After an asthma diagnosis in 2004 , JoJo created the Let ’ s Kick Asthma Foundation in 2013 , a 501c3 non-profit organization that educates , inspires , and supports asthma patients , encouraging them to live healthier lives by exploring ways to control the symptoms .
