According to research by Hank Nuwer , a professor at Franklin College in Indiana , 104 deaths involving hazing have occurred on America ' s campuses since 1970 . There has also been a dramatic increase in deaths per year from 5.5 in the 1980s to 18 in 2000 . Since 2000 , there have been 34 hazing related deaths reported . Unfortunately , today these numbers appear to be increasing .
" I am convinced that the tolerance and acceptance of hazing by students is rooted in bullying at the elementary , middle and high school level . Bullying leads to hazing ", Barnes said . " We believe the primary reasons that hazing continues is that so many young people have such a strong need to belong that they will engage in painful and risky behavior in order to ' make it in ' to the groups they choose ," said Dr . Barnes . There is a prevailing and popular misconception that hazing is an effective way to teach respect and develop discipline . Some students even believe that once you agree to participate in an activity , it can ' t be considered hazing . That very thinking keep individuals who have been hazed to keep silent . " Individuals who are being hazed have two problems ," said Dr . Barnes . " First , they do not want to suffer the disfavor of the members of the group in which they are seeking membership ... they want respect and certainly do not want to be known as a " snitch " or " rat " . .. second , they don ' t know what officials to tell , what the officials will do and whether their identities will be revealed to the group as a result ... so who can they trust ?" .. ::, . As we know , hazing is shrouded in secrecy ," she explains . " Therefore , it must be deterred through secret measures . The ANTIHAZE Hotline gives students , parents and others a way to anonymously report suspected hazing activities to school , university and law-enforcement officials ," said Barbara K . Barnes . The protection of the identities of persons reporting hazing absolutely must be protected .
Earlier the Rev . R . B . Holmes , chairman of the National Anti Hazing Task Force , applauded the ANTIHAZE Hotline after he learned that it was operational . " Any tools and strategies that can be used to get a real handle on the anti-hazing issue are welcome ," Holmes said . We believe hazing and bullying in Greek life and in bands and other school organizations have continued for too long ," said Dr . Barnes . " Its cost in personal and in institutional terms has been too high . Hazing has disrupted the education of too many promising young people . Even more tragically , hazing has ended the lives of too many young men and women causing loss and grief for loved ones and great costs for the institutions . Knowing the destructive consequences and high costs in human and financial terms of hazing and bullying , Dr . Barnes offers the anti-hazing services of her firm to school , college and university officials and also to students , student organizations , and parents .
