The concept of the African American History Calendar for Florida ' s First Coast was initially conceived by Dr . Brenda R . Simmons-Hutchins , Florida State College at Jacksonville ( formerly Florida Community College at Jacksonville ) and the late Mrs . Clovia Russell , AT & T ( formerly Southern Bell ) in 1989 . Their idea was to present biographical sketches of African-American citizens who had contributed to the growth and development of the City of Jacksonville .
Since 1997 , Burger King Restaurants has been the title sponsor . The collaborating partners are Florida State College at Jacksonville , Jacksonville Public Library , the Association for the Study of African-American Life and History - James Weldon Johnson Branch and WJXT Channel 4 .
Parking is available in the garage or on the street . Light refreshments . Free and open to the public .
