HISTORY
Founder of National Hook-Up
of Black Women, Inc.
DR. ARNITA YOUNG-BOSWELL
(1920 - 2002)
The late Arnita Boswell, affectionately known as “Dr. B”, and
several other spirited women founded the National Hook-Up
of Black Women, Inc. (NHBW, Inc.) in 1973, during the
fourth Congressional Black caucus legislative weekend. Their

needs and concerns of women and children. NHBW, Inc.’s

varied business, professional and community disciplines and
represents a broad constituency which crosses all economic,
social and educational levels.
As a civil rights activist for more than 30 years, Dr. Arnita
Young-Boswell was cited for directing the women’s division
of a large civil fights demonstration, led by the late Rev. Dr.
Martin Luther King, Jr., in Chicago in the summer of 1966.
Dr. Arnita Young-Boswell provided leadership and support to
countless women and worked diligently to improve the lives
of women, children and families throughout various communities. For 19 years Boswell taught social work at the
University of Chicago. Later she was director of social services at the University of Illinois at Chicago. She was also a
manager in the mid-1980s of the Family Resource Center in

From the Desk of our
National President
Dr. Wynetta Frazier
Sisterhood as defined by Merriam-Webster dictionary is the
“solidarity of women based on
shared conditions, experiences or
concerns”. The conditions of our
people brought us here. Our experiences have kept us here. And as
our concern grows, we must
remain steadfast and focused on our agenda to educate our
community.
Breast Cancer and Domestic Violence have devastating
affects in our community. We must educate, educate, educate!
I challenge each of you to reach out and educate someone on
