Well versed in all aspects of the mortuary industry , Ms . Carter began her career as a secretary for Walter L . Dorman ' s Funeral Home in 1982 . During her tenure as a secretary , she attended Miami Dade College and received an Associate ' s Degree in Mortuary Science . She also has a Bachelor ' s Degree in Biblical Studies . After the demise of her predecessor and mentor , Mr . Walter L . Dorman , she ventured out and started her own funeral business . Sarah has been recognized by former Mayor John Peyton as the first African American woman in the state of Florida to open a funeral home from start-up and has marked her 15th year in the business as an independent owner . In addition to being a Licensed Funeral Director and Embalmer , Sarah Carter is a Licensed Life Insurance

Agent , Pre-Need Counselor , Notary Republic and a State Sub-Register in the State of Florida . Sarah maintains membership with the NFDA ( National Funeral Directors Association ), Independent Funeral Directors Association , and the local First Coast Mortician ' s Association Past President and current Treasurer . She also has a centralized embalming and training facility at the northside campus . Ms . Carter is the mother of 1 son , 2 daughters , has 4 grands , and 1 great granddaughter . All of her children work in the family business assisting their mother . Sarah ' s son Joseph serves as one of the Funeral Directors and Embalmers . Two nuggets of wisdom she passed on to her children , " Your attitude determines your altitude ", and " There is always a way if you ' re willing ."
