Interim President , Bethune-Cookman University

Raised in Bartow , Florida , Interim President Grimes is a graduate of Kentucky State University , having earned a Bachelor of Science degree in political science . Thereafter , he earned his Juris Doctorate degree from The University of Georgia School of Law and a graduate degree in Practical Theology at International Seminary .
Previously , Interim President Grimes served as the Director for the Center for Law and Social Justice and general counsel for Bethune-Cookman University where he made countless contributions . As an educator , Interim President Grimes has vast teaching experience in higher education , having taught at National Judicial College , Reno , Nevada ; Florida A & M University College of Law , Tallahassee , Florida ; Bethune Cookman University , Daytona Beach , Florida and the University of
Central Florida , Orlando , Florida . Interim President Grimes broke racial barriers as the first African-American County Judge ofVolusia County in 1988 . In 1999 , Governor Jeb Bush appointed Grimes Circuit Judge in the Seventh Judicial Circuit in Florida , the first AfricanĀ­ American to serve as judge for this circuit . During his twenty-five-year career , he served with distinction , handling more than one hundred thousand cases . He retired from the bench on January 31 , 2014 .
A highly respected civic leader , in 1982 , Grimes founded Central Florida Community Development Corporation , a non-profit housing and minority business incubator , which built more than four hundred homes in Central Florida and assisted in the startup and expansion of countless businesses .
