On Saturday , December 21 , 2019 join the West Volusia Branch NAACP and the community as they host the Annual Harry T & Harriette V Moore Memorial Lecture & Luncheon . This year the emphasis and theme of the event is :
The Moore Impact on Voting Rights and the Price They Paid
Harry T . Moore and his wife , Harriette Vyda Simms Moore , both educators , were the victims of a bombing of their home in Mims , Florida on Christmas night in 1951 . The Moores were the first NAACP members to be murdered for civil rights activism . The Moores have been called the first martyrs of the early stage of the Civil Rights Movement . The State of Florida has passed a resolution recognizing the 15th day in December each year as “ Harry Tyson Moore and Harriette Vyda Simms Moore Day ”
Keynote Speaker : Patrick Henry - Former Florida State Representative
Former Rep . Patrick Henry , along with the late Dorothy Hukill , ( former representative from Port Orange ) filed the legislation to honor the husband and wife , declaring Dec . 15 “ Harry Tyson Moore and Harriette Vyda Simms Moore Day ” in the state of Florida .
Luncheon includes book signing by Walter Shaw , Publicist of The Bomb Heard Around the World ; Cultural / Historical presentations by our youth group ; and the event will be MC ’ d by Sonya Mallard , Cultural Center Coordinator : Harry T . & Harriette V . Moore Memorial Park & Museum
