And when they were come into the house , they saw the young child with Mary his mother , and fell down , and worshipped him : and when they had opened their treasures , they presented unto him gifts ; Gold, and Frankincense , and Myrrh .
GOLD : A dense , soft , shiny malleable and ductile metal . Pure gold has a bright yellow color and luster traditionally considered , which it maintains without oxidizing in air or water . Like other precious metals gold is measured by troy weight or by grams . Gold which is valuable was probably given to Jesus for two reasons . Virtue , and his Kingship on earth .
FRANKINCENSE : Is tapped from the flowers and branches of the Boswellia Tree . By slashing the bark which is called striping , and allowing the exuded resins to bleed out and harden . It comes in many types , and its quality is based on color , purity , aroma , age and shape . The essential oil is obtained by steam distillation of the dried resin . Frankincense is used in perfumery and aromatherapy . It was lavishly used in religious rites . Frankincense was probably given to Jesus for two reasons . Prayer , and an incense to symbolize priestship .
MYRRH : Is the aromatic oleoresin of a number of small , thorny tree species of the genus Commiphora Myrrh tree . The tree bleeds a resin of myrrh gum which is waxy and coagulates quickly . After the harvest the gum becomes hard and glossy . The gum is used for different reasons such as perfumes and medicines . Myrrh derives from the Aramaic meaning " was Bitter ". Myrrh was also probably given to baby Jesus for two reasons . Suffering , and as an embalming oil , symbolizing death .
